Jesus H. Christ

So, I've had a lot on my plate lately. Between moving to downtown Charleston, trying to find a better job, being in a relationship for the first time in a long time, trying to get my car fixed, running The Charleston Underground, and trying to catch up on my bills by selling things most precious to me--I really don't have time to stop and breathe.

I don't get paid for The Charleston Underground stuff, none of us do. (Just in case you dont know, we are one of the sole news sources for covering all art/entertainment/nightlife in the capitol city, Charleston, WV...) We are stretched pretty thin, and really, there are only two people running the whole shebang. Myself and Renae. And out of the two of us, only one has a reliable vehicle. So you can imagine how difficult it can be, especially when your two key staff members live 45 minutes away from each other.

Running back and forth to all these events and to pick up staff members--and we don't get a dime from anyone. We are doing all of this for no monetary reward. Would it be nice to get paid for the hard work we do each and every day? Absolutely. But even if we got paid, it would still be an unbelievable workload for just two people.

We're getting burnt out. That's the cold hard facts, people. We need more SERIOUS people to join us and cover the events, but really there is no incentive. You do work, sometimes people thank you for it. That's about it. Someone posted today on CHUG's FB that it seemed like Renae was playing favorites with bands. To some, that might appear to be true, but the simple fact is, the bands that want covered pick her up and bring her to the show so she can cover it. I, myself, tend to only go to Empty Glass Open Mic, and that's bc I only have Mondays and Tuesdays off from my PAYING job, and my boyfriend runs the open mic, so i go down, spend time with him, cover the open mic while Im there and call it a day.

So if people would stop being accusatory for five minutes, and even, I dunno, spend a day with our staff.. you would see how insanely stretched we are. We have 20 different shows to go to, 20 stories to write and 20 events to photograph/video. There's two of us and we don't get paid. Show a little patience and appreciation for us as we try to get everything together in an orderly fashion.

That's not to mention our food reviews (which we pay for out of our own pockets, when we do them) and our contest prizes, which we usually pay for out of our own pockets as well. The only reason we do this is because we love music, art, entertainment and the like -- and we want to see our Charleston be the best Charleston it can be. We want to see our musicians become famous, our artists become celebrated around the globe, our performers to be the most watched thing on Youtube. We do this for you guys.

We thought about putting together a festival, but we had to push it back due to funding. We're probably going to do a kickstarter/indiegogo project for it and hopefully you guys can help us help Charleston's scene.

So with all that being said, I just want to let you guys know that we're still here, still working and still trying to bring you what we can with just the two of us.

If you would like to join our team, call 323-744-0723 - that goes directly to my phone.

Overworked and Underpaid,
Jessica Cha

I'm sorry you're getting crap. CHUG has potential and I'd much rather be positive. It's not an easy thing to do, building a website and trying to come up with content. But you all will figure out a workflow. If there is anyway I can help, let me know, as I'm starting to walk my video camera with me. But you seem to be a highly talented, creative girl. It will all come together.

Thanks Steven, glad someone appreciates everything we put into CHUG. We've recently added three new staff after I had to let one go.
